Barral Method Learning Path
A structured pathway from foundational visceral manipulation to BI-Diplomate certification.
The Barral Method is taught in a deliberate, progressive sequence. This page maps the full pathway from the introductory MV1 course to the BI-Diplomate certification, including prerequisites, recommended order and why the sequence matters for sound clinical integration. It is intended for licensed physiotherapists, osteopaths and physicians who are weighing up whether the investment in this training fits their clinical practice.
Barral Institute Spain delivers the official curriculum approved by Jean-Pierre Barral, with permanent headquarters in Toledo and teaching activity in Madrid, Barcelona and other Spanish cities. The full curriculum, prerequisites and credentials described below follow the international standard. For a deeper introduction to the underlying clinical model, see The Method.
Who is this pathway for
The Barral Method is postgraduate continuing education, not an entry-level qualification. The learning path is designed for:
- Licensed physiotherapists with at least an undergraduate degree and clinical experience in musculoskeletal or pelvic-floor practice.
- Osteopaths trained in a recognised programme (DO, MSc Ost. or equivalent) seeking to deepen visceral, neural and vascular manual approaches.
- Physicians in rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, paediatrics or pain medicine who already practise manual therapy and want a reproducible framework for soft-tissue and visceral assessment.
- Specialist clinicians in pelvic floor, paediatric or neurological rehabilitation looking to extend their toolkit with a coherent, internationally taught method.
If you are unsure whether your professional title qualifies, please contact us via the contact page before enrolling.
Pathway overview
The pathway is organised in five stages. Stages one to three are sequential; stage four (specialisation) branches according to your clinical interests; stage five is the BI-Diplomate certification.
- Stage 1 – Visceral foundations. MV1 to MV3.
- Stage 2 – Advanced visceral. MV4 and MV5.
- Stage 3 – Neural manipulation. NM1 to NM4.
- Stage 4 – Specialisation tracks. Brain (MAB), vascular (VVMU), articular (MAUE / MALE / MASP), paediatric (PVM), listening techniques and refresher seminars.
- Stage 5 – BI-Diplomate. International certification of full method competency.
General recommendation: leave between three and six months between courses to integrate the material clinically. Stacking several intensive courses with no clinical practice between them substantially reduces consolidation of manual skills, regardless of how attentive the learner is during the seminar.
Stage 1 – Visceral foundations (MV1 to MV3)
This stage introduces the core principles of visceral manipulation. It is the gateway to the method for any professional training with Barral Institute Spain and, save for properly justified exceptions, must be completed before progressing to later stages.
- MV1 – Abdomen. Four days. Prerequisite: professional licence in physiotherapy, osteopathy or manual medicine. Covers liver, gallbladder, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, kidneys and colon. The base on which every subsequent course rests.
- MV2 – Advanced abdomen and connections. Four days. Prerequisite: MV1. Deepens inter-visceral relationships, digestive chains and the clinical reasoning needed for refractory cases.
- MV3 – Pelvis. Four days. Prerequisite: MV1 (MV2 recommended). Bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate, rectum, fasciae and pelvic floor. Particularly relevant for pelvic-floor physiotherapists, functional gynaecology and urotherapy.
Stage 2 – Advanced visceral (MV4 and MV5)
- MV4 – Thorax. Four days. Prerequisite: MV1 (MV1-3 recommended). Lungs, pleura, mediastinum, pericardium and diaphragm. Highly relevant for persistent neck pain, functional dyspnoea, post-thoracic-surgery sequelae and post-COVID dysautonomia presentations.
- MV5 – Advanced diagnosis and emotional approach. Four days. Prerequisite: MV1-4. Integrates the patient’s psycho-emotional dimension with the visceral approach, building on advanced palpation and tissue listening. Recommended for clinicians with some clinical maturity.
Stage 3 – Neural Manipulation (NM1 to NM4)
Neural manipulation is the natural extension of the visceral method into the peripheral and autonomic nervous system and the cranial nerves. Its theoretical backbone lies in the textbooks Manual Therapy for the Peripheral Nerves and Manual Therapy for the Cranial Nerves.
- NM1 – Peripheral nervous system (introduction). Four days. Prerequisite: MV1 (MV1-3 recommended). Applied anatomy of the peripheral nervous system, principles of neural tension, general release techniques.
- NM2 – Upper limb. Four days. Prerequisite: NM1. Brachial and cervical plexuses, median, ulnar, radial and suprascapular nerves. Indicated for lateral epicondylalgia, functional carpal tunnel presentations and cervicobrachialgia.
- NM3 – Lower limb and autonomic system. Four days. Prerequisite: NM1. Lumbar and sacral plexuses, sciatic, femoral and peroneal nerves, pelvic plexuses and the abdominopelvic autonomic axis.
- NM4 – Brain and skull. Four days. Prerequisite: NM1 (NM2-3 recommended). Cranial nerves, skull base, cranial neural approach. Bridges into the MAB block.
Stage 4 – Specialisation tracks
Once stages one to three are consolidated, the pathway branches according to each clinician’s interests. These blocks can be taken in parallel; there is no obligation to finish one before starting another.
- MAB – Manual Approach to the Brain. Three levels (MAB1, MAB2, MAB3). Prerequisite: MV1-3 plus NM1 minimum. Manual work on the brain, its membranes and vascularisation. Applications include dysautonomia, post-traumatic-brain-injury sequelae, functional cognitive complaints and post-stroke care.
- Vascular – VVMU / VVML. Visceral Vascular Manipulation. Prerequisite: MV1 (MV1-3 recommended). Work on visceral arteries, veins and the lymphatic system. Indicated for functional vascular presentations, oedema and post-vascular-surgery sequelae.
- Advanced articular – MAUE / MALE / MASP. Manual articular work for upper limb, lower limb and spine. Prerequisite: MV1. Articular approaches derived from the Barral Method.
- Paediatric – PVM1 / PVM2. Paediatric visceral manipulation. Prerequisite: recognised paediatric qualification plus MV1 minimum. Infants and children; specific paediatric training is required.
- Listening techniques (TE). Cross-cutting course on tissue listening as a diagnostic tool.
- MV refresher seminars. Periodic recap seminars for already-trained clinicians who want to review content and discuss complex cases.
Stage 5 – BI-Diplomate certification
The BI-Diplomate (Barral Institute Diplomate) is the international certification that recognises full mastery of the method. It requires substantial completion of the curriculum, attendance at advanced integration courses, presentation of documented clinical cases and successful completion of a practical examination assessed by senior Barral Institute faculty. It is recognised internationally as the standard credential for the method.
Beyond the professional standing it confers, holding the BI-Diplomate enables inclusion in the official directory of certified practitioners. Exact requirements and assessment criteria are reviewed periodically and may change between cohorts; for the current criteria please consult the BI-D certification page.

Hours and credentials
The full pathway represents several hundred hours of in-person, hands-on tuition spread over multiple years. As a rough orientation:
- Visceral block (MV1-MV5): approximately 160 contact hours.
- Neural block (NM1-NM4): approximately 128 contact hours.
- Specialisation tracks: variable, typically 32 to 96 additional contact hours depending on the chosen tracks.
- BI-Diplomate integration: additional advanced seminars, supervised case work and practical examination.
Most courses carry continuing-education credits for physiotherapists in Spain (CFC) and equivalent credits abroad; the exact figures are confirmed for each edition. Frequently asked questions about enrolment, credentials and clinical scope are collected on the FAQ page; specific terms used throughout the curriculum are explained in the glossary.
Where to start
If you have never taken any course in the method, the answer is always the same: MV1. It is the only entry point and the foundation on which every other course is built. From there your route depends on your clinical profile, whether that is pelvic floor, neurology, paediatrics, persistent pain or general musculoskeletal practice.
To see upcoming dates in Toledo, Madrid and other Spanish venues, consult the current course calendar. To request a place directly, use the enrolment form linked from each course page. If you would prefer to discuss your situation before enrolling, please get in touch via the contact page.
