BI-Diplomate Certification (BI-D)

An internationally recognised credential for clinicians trained in the Barral Method — visceral, neural, vascular and cranial manual therapy.

What the BI-Diplomate is

The BI-Diplomate (BI-D) is the highest professional credential awarded within the Barral Institute (international network founded by Jean-Pierre Barral, DO). It recognises a clinician’s integrated mastery of the Barral Method across its visceral, neural, vascular and cranial branches, and identifies the holder as a senior clinical and teaching reference within the manual-therapy community. The BI-D is the outcome of a structured course pathway, documented case work and a final integrative examination.

From Barral Institute Spain we host the official seminars in Spanish-speaking territory and accompany each candidate through the certification process — but the credential itself is issued centrally by the international network, ensuring that a BI-D earned through any official venue carries the same standard. For a primer on the underlying clinical framework, see The Barral Method and the glossary of terms.

How the certification pathway works

The BI-D is reached in stages. Each stage is a stand-alone professional certification that can be used clinically, and each one is a prerequisite for the next. The table below summarises the four official levels, the courses required and the clinical outcome at each step.

Level Required courses Hours / case work Clinical outcome
CVTP
Certified Visceral Therapy Practitioner
Visceral Manipulation 1, 2 and 3 (MV1–MV3). Approx. 120 contact hours plus introductory case write-ups. Foundation level — competent integration of visceral assessment and treatment in everyday practice.
CVMP
Certified Visceral Manipulation Practitioner
CVTP requirements plus MV4 and MV5. Approx. 200 contact hours plus advanced visceral case documentation. Advanced level — fluent visceral reasoning across complex multi-system presentations.
CNMP
Certified Neural Manipulation Practitioner
Full neural series NM1, NM2, NM3 and NM4. Approx. 160 contact hours plus neural case write-ups. Pre-diplomate level — specialist competence in peripheral and central nervous-system manual therapy.
BI-D
Barral Institute Diplomate
CVMP + CNMP plus advanced courses (Articular, Vascular, Paediatric Visceral and additional electives). Final thesis or clinical project, five documented cases and the integrative practical examination. Diplomate level — the highest recognition; mentor and senior clinical reference within the network.

Hours shown are indicative averages. The exact catalogue, prerequisites and any electives in force at the time of application are confirmed when you open your candidate file with our team. Browse the current course calendar.

The practical examination

Examination format and fees are set centrally by the international network so that every BI-Diplomate, regardless of the country in which they trained, meets the same clinical standard. As a general reference, the examination structure includes:

  • A written/theoretical section of approximately 25 questions, with a pass threshold of 80 %.
  • A practical, hands-on section assessing palpatory accuracy, clinical reasoning and treatment delivery in real time.
  • Five documented case write-ups demonstrating applied clinical reasoning across visceral, neural and related systems.
  • A retake option for unsuccessful candidates, normally at 50 % of the original fee, with a reasonable window in which to re-sit.

Current fees, exam dates and venues are managed centrally by the network — we will confirm the figures in force at the time you apply.

Recertification and continuing education

The BI-D is not a lifetime title. To keep the credential active, every Diplomate must accrue 24 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU) every four years. Eligible activities include:

  • Attendance at new official Barral Institute courses (visceral, neural, vascular, articular, cranial).
  • Refresher and update seminars.
  • Attendance at international congresses recognised by the network.
  • Teaching activity as an assistant to a lead instructor in official seminars.

If a Diplomate fails to complete recertification on time, the credential becomes inactive until the continuing-education requirement is met — the title is not lost, but it cannot be advertised as active during the inactive period.

The pathway from Spain

Clinicians trained in Spain follow exactly the same procedure as any other international candidate. The credential itself is issued centrally; what we provide locally at Barral Institute Spain is full administrative and pedagogical support throughout the route:

  • Validation of your training file and prerequisite mapping.
  • Recommended course order and realistic timeline planning.
  • Guidance on documenting clinical cases at each level.
  • Liaison with the central registry so that seminars completed at any official venue are correctly reflected in your unique candidate file.

If you are considering the BI-D pathway, the simplest first step is to write to our team with a brief outline of your current training. We will reply with the next courses you need and a realistic plan to reach Diplomate level.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the certification cost?

Examination and certification fees are set centrally by the international network and vary by level (CVTP, CVMP, CNMP, BI-D) and region. Course fees, on the other hand, are published on our course pages. We confirm the exact certification fees in force when you open your candidate file with us.

Is there a required course order?

Yes, within each series. The visceral series must be completed in order (MV1 → MV2 → MV3 → MV4 → MV5), and so must the neural series (NM1 → NM2 → NM3 → NM4). Some advanced or cross-branch courses have additional prerequisites; we provide the exact prerequisite matrix when you request a place. See the general FAQ for more on enrolment.

Can I pursue the BI-D if I am already an osteopath?

Yes. The BI-D pathway is open to physiotherapists, qualified osteopaths, physicians trained in manual medicine and other licensed healthcare professionals, provided they complete the official course pathway and the corresponding examinations. Prior osteopathic or manual-therapy training is an excellent starting point for the visceral and neural sequences.

What happens if I do not pass the examination?

A retake option is available, typically at 50 % of the original fee. Candidates have a reasonable window in which to re-sit the failed section. The central network manages the retake calendar and the exact format applicable to each level.

Is the BI-D a lifetime credential?

No. To keep the title active, holders must document 24 hours of continuing education (CEU) every four years. If recertification is not completed on time, the credential becomes inactive until the continuing-education requirement is met.

Is the BI-D recognised internationally?

The BI-D is issued by the Barral Institute (international network founded by Jean-Pierre Barral, DO), which has trained clinicians in many countries over more than four decades. It is widely recognised within the visceral- and neural-manipulation community. Specific legal or professional-college recognition depends on each jurisdiction and must be verified by the candidate with the relevant regulatory body.

Which courses count towards the BI-D — and can I combine seminars taken at different venues?

Every official Barral Institute course counts towards your certification, regardless of the country in which it was taken. The central registry maintains a single candidate file per clinician. If you have completed seminars at another official venue, send us the certificates and we will coordinate with the central registry so that they are reflected correctly in your training itinerary.

How do I apply for the final BI-D examination?

The final BI-D examination is requested through the central network once all prior course and case-work requirements are complete. From Barral Institute Spain we audit your file before submission to make sure nothing is missing, and we accompany you through the formal application. Write to us when you believe you are ready and we will run the pre-application review with you.
